10/01/2004: "Lurkers"

Lurk:
1. To lie in wait.
2. To move furtively, sneak.
3. To exist unobserved.

A couple days ago a student came into my office and introduced herself. She told me that she had been reading my blog from her town in the lower 48 (in a Southern state) and that it was one of the things that convinced her to move to Juneau, and attend school at UAS. I asked her if she'd ever left a comment and she said no, that she was just reading it...her dad too (who also thinks it would be cool to move to Alaska).

I asked her if she read where I said to beware moving here in August (because it's the start of the rainy season) and she said that she hadn't, but that she doesn't mind the rain and that she loves it here and is so happy that she came. That made me feel better. There is a certain responsibility that I feel towards people who ask me about moving to Alaska, let alone people who may be lurking out there, making decisions without making contact.

I would love to hear from anyone else who has read this blog without commenting. Don't be shy!

Hi - I'm an occasional reader of your blog (via Anna & Howard). I'm rather stunned to be defined as possibly a lurker. Judging by the stats on my blog, I have a lot of readers, but not many who comment. I have also thought of ask them not to be shy and comment, but I guess I'm too shy to ask!

Love your stories of an artist's life!

Hi Marja-Leena (what a beautiful name!) I hope you know I was teasing about the "lurker" comment... I myself read a lot more blogs than the ones I actually comment on.

I just checked out your site and I love your work. I got my BFA in printmaking and seeing your site makes me miss it badly! Are the images on your home page photos of zinc and copper plates with an extreme flat bite? Very nice.

Anyway, thanks for saying hi, I was more currious than anything...my site is similar to yours in that I get a lot of traffic but only a few regulars who comment. I guess that's normal, huh? I also like your artist's journal and I'll be back to do a little lurking of my own!

I was looking for Alaska blogs and, upon searching, I found your's to be articulate and interesting. Now for a little about this lurker: 43, originally from Fairbanks and back after 25 years to AK, in Anchorage as of last February. I work in federal law enforcement and like to read and write in my spare time. And watch the September rains (luckily). Thank you for sharing some of your life with us.

Hi David,
Federal Law Enforcement? What does that mean exactly (FBI)? I know there is that relatively new building downtown, or is that the CIA?

As for writing, you might want to consider a blog of your own. A lot of writers have them to get feedback from other writers/readers about their work. Anyway, thanks for the introduction!

:) I've found you via Blog Directory's link 'Globe of Blogs'. Happy to find an artist writing from Alaska. I'll be back here...

Hi JJ,
Just went and checked out your blog as well. I liked the story about why you started blogging, and the photos of Amsterdam are gorgeous.

Thanks for decloaking.
